Khumbu

Cultural Heritage: The Sherpas first arrived in Khumbu over 400 years ago from eastern Tibet. With a way of life adapted to the harsh environment, the Sherpa economy was traditionally based on livestock, trade and the cultivation of Potatoes, buckwheat and barley. Conservation is interwoven with survival in the Himalaya. Sherpa practices encompass forest management, composting waste for the fertilizers and the seasonal movement of yak herds to prevent overgrazing. Sherpas are followers of Mahayana Buddhism. The main monasteries are found at Pangboche, and Thame, with the largest at Tyangboche also housing a library and cultural centre. Attractive prayer flags, mani stones, mani walls and the stupas are all sacred sites, to be passed in a clockwise direction, while the peaks are considered home to the Gods. Major Buddhist festivals are the village celebrations of Dumje; generally in June and Mani Rimdu.

Natural Heritage: The impressive glacier and rivers sculpted scenery of Khumbu supports a series of altitudinal vegetation zones. Below 3200m. oak or pine dominate, replaced higher up by birch ad the famous rhododendrons. Above the tree line dwarf rhododendron and juniper scrub is found whileat the highest levels (upto 6000m.) only mosses, lichens and the alpine plants survive. These vegetation types provide habitat for a variety of wild lives including a number of endangered species: snow leopard, musk deer, and wolf, blood pheasant and the locally abundant impeyan pheasant. Other animals likely to be seen are Himalayan Thar, weasel, mouse hare, griffon vulture and Tibetan snow cock.

Climate:  The summer climate is cool and wet and winter is cold and dry Almost all of the annual precipitation, averaging less than 1000 mm, falls during the summer monsoon, from the end of May to September. Climatically, the best time to visit the area is between October and May, except for December to February when, temperatures often drop below 0 degree and there is heavy snowfall.
