MUSTANG
(14 days)
A
Tibetan plateau-like and land of howling winds and rocky hills, Mustang is
stark, beautiful and awe-inspiring. Prehistoric cave dwellings pockmark the bare
hillsides and ancient Buddhist monasteries point to its mystical heritage. Lo
Manthang, the capital of Mustang, is a walled city situated at an altitude of
3,730 m. Occupying the upper end of the Kali Gandaki Gorge adjoining the Tibetan
border, Mustang is another world. We fly to Jomsom from Pokhara and start
walking north up the Kali Gandaki river passing the village of Kagbeni and reach
Chaile after a steep climb. Walking through fields of barley and after a number
of ups and downs, we arrive at Charang where there is a huge Tibetan-style
fortress perched on the edge of the gorge. Traveling across a desert-like
landscape, we reach Lo Manthang. After a day of resting and looking around, we
return to Jomsom for the flight back to Pokhara and Kathmandu.
